Clocaenog in Wales

The UK is located in N.Wales, within Clocaenog Forest at Craig Bron-banog (53x03' N 3x28' W), at 490m altitutude. The site is an island of Calluna heathland of approximately 15 ha surrounded by plantation forestry. 

 

There is no grazing or burning at the site and management is by clipping or turf removal. The vegetation is dominated by mature Calluna vulgaris but with both Vaccinium myrtillus and Empetrum nigrum present and very sparse Deschampsia flexuosa. The soil is an acid peaty podzol. Rainfall is estimated to be 1500 - 2000 mm with an average air temperature of 8 - 10 deg. C. N deposition is estimated at present to beClocaenog and beautiful Welsh landscape 20 - 25 kgN/ha/yr.
